Latrun - Israel Tours

The place where God made the moon stand still (Josh. 10:12). Latrun Monastery is one of the most beautiful monasteries

Tours to the Holy Land include stops at some of the most beautiful monasteries, such as the Latrun Monastery. Located in a high spot that provides a wide view of the Ayalone Valley, which is the place where God made the moon stand still (Josh. 10:12). Not far from the Holy City, visitors on Israel tours can stop at the peaceful Latrun Monastery before going across the Jerusalem highway to Emmaus (Luke 24:13). Built by French Trappist monks in the early 20th century, the monastery has lovely walkways that pass on the outskirts of the vineyards where they pick grapes for grape juice and wine. The church of Latrun was built in an interesting style that mixes both Byzantine and Gothic styles. The Latrun, like the monks that reside there who have kept a vow of silence, is extremely quiet and tranquil and the only voices that can be heard are those of the monks that sell wine and olive oil to visitors. Latrun’s name was derived from a 12th century castle that once stood in the same spot, which was called La Tour de Chevaliers (“the knights’ tower”). Travelers over the years made a connection between the name and the Latin word “latro” (thief, believing that this was the site of the home of the “good thief” who was crucified next to Jesus (Luke 23:40-43).
