Mea Shearim - Israel Tours

An extremely Orthodox neighborhood and a sharp contrast to the modern communities around it, Meah She’arim exposes visitors to a deep religious and culture experience

If you would like a serious taste of Jewish culture during your Jewish travel, Meah She’arim is an extremely Orthodox neighborhood. In sharp contrast to the modern communities around it, Meah She’arim exposes visitors to a deep religious and culture experience similar to stepping back in time. Meah She’arim was the dream of a group of Jews who decided in 1874 to build a neighborhood outside of Jerusalem. They chose the name Meah She’arim as it was in that week’s Torah portion, which means one-hundred fold, the bumper crop Isaac reaped (Gen. 26:12), showing favor. All of the original buildings are still there, making it a very authentic experience. Visitors who stop in Meah She’arim during Jewish tours must dress modestly-skirts for women with knees and elbows covered-and pictures should not be taken.
